You can claim office costs, travel, vehicle mileage (45p/mile for the first 10,000 miles), home office costs, stock and materials, marketing, professional fees, insurance, training, subscriptions, phone/internet, and more. Expenses must be wholly and exclusively for business purposes.
When is the self-assessment deadline for self-employed?+
For the 2025/26 tax year, the online filing deadline is 31 January 2027. Paper returns must be filed by 31 October 2026. Late filing attracts an automatic £100 penalty, increasing to £10/day after 3 months.
Do I need to pay National Insurance if I am self-employed?+
Yes. If your profits exceed £12,570 you pay Class 2 NI (£3.45/week) and Class 4 NI (6% on profits between £12,571 and £50,270, then 2% above that). Class 2 contributions count toward your State Pension entitlement.
What is the trading allowance for 2025/26?+
The trading allowance is £1,000. If your gross self-employed income is under £1,000 you do not need to register for Self Assessment or pay tax. If it exceeds £1,000, you can deduct the £1,000 allowance instead of claiming individual expenses.
